Cooking with nature
Do we need all these products we can find in a food store or supermarket? Or is it possible to get our food from the great outdoors? Learn to cook with products you find in nature.
For this activity you will need:
- Cooking equipment
- Books or internet to find out which edible plants and fruits grow in your surroundings
Scouts are going to create a recipe and cook it with edible plants, fruits, etc they can find in nature in their immediate surroundings.
- Scouts have to find out which edible plants, fruits etc. grow in their immediate surroundings which they can use to prepare a recipe, and they are going to cook.
- Make a decision on what to make considering the information they found about edible plants, fruits, etc.
- Gather the necessary ingredients in nature for their recipe.
- Prepare the recipe and eat it.
Creating and understanding that preparing your own meal is a skill which you are going to use your whole life and that we do not need to import all kind of vegetables and fruits, because there is a great variation available in your direct surroundings.
By using this we help to work towards a more sustainable world. Reducing carbon dioxide which otherwise was being produced by transporting goods across long distances.
If we take a look in the grocery store or the supermarket at all the different products, certainly fresh food and the places where is was produced, you will amazed about the different countries which show up. You could ask yourself if it is always necessary to get fresh products from all over the world. Take in consideration the energy and work this have taken to get this product to your place. But also what this means in considering the impact on our climate.
We can reduce this impact by making more use of things that grow in our immediate surroundings and which also provide a very healthy food source.
