Influencer-for-a-day – Can you “sell” a democratic message
This activity focuses on how social media can be used as a platform for democratic debate, education and activism. The scouts must create a post or video that conveys an important democratic
message.
The purpose of the activity is to show how social media can influence society and politics.
In addition, the scouts learn to formulate a clear message. But also to understand that different platforms convey messages differently. The activity takes 15-20 minutes, and its difficulty level is easy.
For this activity you will need:
- Paper and markers for those who want to create physical posts.
- Phones or tablets if they want to create digital posts.
- If digital devices are not available, the posts can be drawn or written on paper.
- If the scouts do not want to film or take pictures, they can explain their post orally.
In addition, you can print the following:
- List of democratic topics.
- Examples of effective social media posts.
- Divide the scouts into small groups (2-4 people per group). Each group is tasked with creating a post or a video about a democratic message. They can choose from different formats:
- TikTok dance about freedom of expression
- Instagram story about voting rights
- Facebook post with a debate question
- Once they have created their post, they can present it to the group and explain why they chose that particular message.
- End with a round of reflection:
- How would this post affect people on social media?
- How can social media be used positively in a democracy?
