Staying safe online during JOTI

Scouts on the internet

JOTI was a great opportunity to connect with Scouts and others around the world, especially during these exceptional times. It is very important that all participants stay safe while they engaged in these activities. That’s why Safe From Harm is a priority programme for World Scouting, with actions and procedures designed to make sure all Scouts feel safe. Together, we are all responsible for creating a safe environment where everyone can have fun and be respected. 

 

Dangers on the internet

With all of its opportunities and enriching content, using the Internet also comes with many risks, including threats to personal data, wellbeing or safety. Some people can have wrong intentions and we all need to be aware of this and know how to respond. JOTI encouraged all participants to take our Being Safe Online e-learning to earn more about online safety and to be fully prepare them for JOTI.

Minimum age & adult supervision


Participants had to be 13 years or older to sign-up. To ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone, all participants between the ages of 13 and 18 were expected to inform and involve a parent or guardian in their JOTI experience, including reviewing this page together. The adults involved were responsible for supervising children’s online activities. A parent or guardian was able to register on behalf of a child younger than 13 years old, and asked to participate with them for the duration of the event.

 

Breaking the rules 

It was clarified that if the rules below were broken by any participant, a range of actions may be taken against the account(s) which broke the rules, such as suspending or deleting the account or being contacted by the Safe From Harm team for further investigation.

…inform and involve an adult in my JOTI experience.

…behave like a Scout, following the Promise and Law.*

…be respectful and friendly with those I meet online.

…never participate in or promote hurtful speech, including hate, humiliation or judgment of others.

Need help? Here’s what to do!

  1. First, tell a trusted adult, such as a parent, guardian or Scout leader, about your concern.
  2. E-mail safe.joti@scout.org with your name, the platform it happened on, what happened, the name of the account which worries you, and a screenshot of the incident.
  3. A moderator will answer your email within 30 minutes or less. Our moderators can reply in English, French or Spanish.

Safe from Harm Guidelines

 

The purpose of the WOSM Safe from Harm policy is to protect all our members from harm. Abuse, harassment and bullying are completely unacceptable within Scouting. That is why having a Safe From Harm procedure is mandatory at all world, regional and national Scout events. This includes mandatory Safe From Harm training for all WOSM staff and volunteers.

 

Throughout JOTI, our aim is to protect young people online and to provide valuable information to adult leaders, parents and volunteers on our safeguarding approach.  

 

The rules applied to all participants using WOSM’s online platforms or those of our Trusted Partners for JOTI.  Participants were informed that If anything goes wrong, upsets or worries them when using these online platforms, to reach out to a trusted adult and/or write to us at safe.joti@scout.org. As needed, we can help any participant follow up with your National Scout Organization (NSO)’s International Commissioner or Safe From Harm co-ordinator.

 

We are committed to our responsibility to ensure that each participant’s experience of the JOTI was as safe as possible as they networked and made new friends across the world. 

 

We have a dedicated team of moderators who monitored the JOTI platforms to ensure that all of our users are Safe From Harm online. The moderators worked with our Safe from Harm team to follow-up on any safety concerns raised. 

 

World Safe From Harm policy is implemented alongside the WOSM Code of Conduct that outlines how members of WOSM are expected to behave with other Scouts.
