Become young food heroes! Activities for coordinators of groups of kids
Food grows in gardens and forests. It is fished from oceans and rivers. It is hunted or gathered from the land. Yet most of the food we eat comes from farms of all sizes, each requiring care and hard work. It takes land, healthy soil, the right weather, skills, labor, and resources to grow the food that reaches our tables.
This activity helps young participants understand that effort in a simple and hands-on way. As a leader, you will guide them to explore where food comes from, learn why reducing waste matters, and discover small actions that help care for the planet.
You will find a full list of materials along with activity descriptions in the booklet below.
Preparation
- Review the event description to understand the objectives and learning outcomes of the activity.
- Download the Food Waste Action Kit β Booklet for Kids and print one copy per participant.
- Open the booklet and explore the missions. Read the first pages together to learn what food waste is, then choose one of the two activities to try.
- Gather all the necessary materials in advance. The required items are listed on each activity page in the booklet.
With your group
- Introduce the topic by discussing where food comes from and why reducing Food Loss and Waste (FLW) matters. Watch the suggested videos together to learn more.
- Guide the group through one or both of the booklet activities, step by step, making sure every child can participate.
- Reflect together on what they learned. Use the two validation questions from the Food Waste Action Kit β Booklet for Kids to check understanding.
- Encourage each participant to commit to one small daily action to reduce food waste at home or in their community.
