Letter to the democracy of the future
In this activity, Scouts will reflect on what democracy means to them, how it can change in the future, and what that means for society. The activity takes about 15–20 minutes and can be adapted in difficulty (read how under Additional information).
For this activity you will need:
- Paper and pens to write the letters.
- Envelopes or a time capsule to store the letters.
- Introduce the idea of sending a letter to the future.
- Ask questions such as "What will democracy look like in 50 years?"
- Give participants time to write their letters.
- The letters can be read out loud (if they wish) or placed in a time capsule.
- End with a reflection:
- How would a person in the future react to this letter?
- How has democracy developed through history?
This activity can be adapted in difficulty:
- To make it easier: Allow participants to draw instead of writing if they find it difficult to express themselves in words.
- To make it harder: Ask participants to argue for their position in the letter. For example: “Why do you think democracy will become stronger or weaker in the future?"
