Social Media for Social Good
Explore how you can use social media as a tool for positive change and social good. You will engage in a scavenger hunt-style activity with challenges, each designed to teach a different aspect of using social media for positive purposes.
Challenge 1: Online Safety and Responsibility (10 minutes)
- Consider and discuss the importance of responsible social media usage and online safety. Learn more about online safety at JOTA-JOTI here https://www.jotajoti.info/be-safe and then share something new you learned with a friend or family member. Maybe you can help others be safe online with this information!
Challenge 2: Spread Positivity (10 minutes)
- Create a positive and inspiring social media post related to an issue you care about. When you upload it, use the hashtag #JOTAJOTI and tag us @jota_joti! Take a look at our World Mental Health Day post for inspiration: https://www.instagram.com/p/CjiLrpnrMvP/
Challenge 3: Raise Awareness (10 minutes)
- Research and share facts or statistics about a global issue that you are passionate about, using your social media platforms to raise awareness.
Challenge 4: Mobilize for Change (15 minutes)
- Alone or with your friends, look at National Scout Organizations or NGOs such as WWF of UNICEF on social media to learn about the topics they’re sharing. You can then teach your Scout Group about your latest discovery!
Challenge 5: Become a World Scouting Champion (10 minutes)
- Come and find us on social media! Find and share an inspiring post with your friends or Scout Group and encourage them to follow World Scouting for Scouting news, updates and inspiration! You can find us on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, Threads and LinkedIn.
Tips
- To share a strong message, it’s better to focus on one specific cause at a time so that you don’t confuse or overwhelm your audience.
- Remember that not everyone will have the same views and experiences as you. It’s okay if someone doesn’t agree but if you receive unkind messages, make sure to notify a trusted adult and remove the comments/block the person if necessary. While it’s okay for people to disagree, we should always be respectful with each other.
Debriefing questions
- What challenges did you face while completing these activities?
- Did you learn something new while using social media in this way? If so, did you find it more engaging to learn through social media compared to more traditional ways, such as books?
- What are some ways you can continue using social media for social good in your own community?
This activity can be completed over a few days. After completing this challenge, take a moment to reflect on your experience. Consider how using social media for this specific purpose made you feel, what you learned, and how it might impact the causes you care about. Share your reflections with your fellow participants to inspire and learn from each other's experiences. Remember, every small action counts towards making a big difference in the world!
